Nhân dịp Tổng thống Obama viếng thăm Việt Nam vào tháng 5 năm nay, chúng tôi khẩn thiết kêu gọi quí vị ký vào thỉnh nguyện thư đến Tổng thống kêu gọi tự do tín ngưỡng cho Việt Nam và chính quyền Hà Nội chấm dứt đàn áp Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam Thống Nhất. Bốn mươi mốt năm sau chiến tranh Việt Nam, sự tự do tín ngưỡng ở Việt Nam vẫn bị giới hạn một cách khắc nghiệt. Thành viên của Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam Thống Nhất vẫn đang bị áp bức và người lãnh đạo của Giáo Hội, Đức Tăng Thống Thích Quảng Độ, vẫn bị quản thúc tại gia.

Trong chuyến đi Việt Nam sắp đến, chúng tôi tha thiết kêu gọi Tổng thống lên tiếng ủng hộ sự tự do tín ngưỡng và đòi hỏi chính quyền Việt Nam thả tất cả các tù nhân tôn giáo và cho phép họ được bày tỏ và thực hành tín ngưỡng của họ. Đây cũng phù hợp với Điều 18 trong Tuyên Ngôn Quốc Tế Nhân Quyền, cũng như nguyên tắc căn bản của sự lập quốc của chúng ta. Chúng tôi rất biết ơn sự giúp đỡ của Tổng thống.

President Barack Obama

Dear Mr. President,

Forty one years after the end of Vietnam War, religious freedom in Vietnam is still severely restricted. Members of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam are being persecuted and its 87-year-old leader, the Venerable Thich Quang Do is detained under house arrest.

On the eve of your historic visit to Vietnam, we strongly ask that you speak out for religious liberty and urge the government of Vietnam to release all prisoners of faith and to allow them to peacefully profess and practice their religions. This is consistent with Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the basic principle of our American founding. We are grateful for your help.
